A Spring Haul: A Review

Over the last few months I have gotten the chance to try a bunch of different products. This haul and review will contain anything from skincare to CBD to sexual wellness to art. I’m given the honor of being gifted these products and also speaking with many of the owners of the small businesses I support. Below you will find interviews and short reviews along with photos of the products themselves.

Florapy:

Florapy is a brand that sells sheet masks! These masks are made for different times, skincare needs and feelings. I used them over a few months when I felt I needed one. They worked magic on my skin and on the skin of those who got to try them out around me. They softened, cleared and cleaned up the skin.

The interview:

What inspires you?  If you are open to receiving it, inspiration can come from everywhere. Once you decide in what way you need to be inspired, the universe supports you with signals from all directions.

What’s your sign and how do you think that plays a part in your life?

I’m a Pisces and I think that plays big part in being hyper tuned in to details such as trends, people, and energies.

What is the main purpose of your account/brand?

Promoting skincare as selfcare. Transforming skincare that can sometimes feel like a chore, to a more mindful wellness experience for the mind/body/soul.

What is something you love deeply about yourself?

Work-ethic, drive and hustle.

What’s some advice you have for other people revolving around confidence?

Confidence can require discipline and thought training to keep that inner critic at bay and that is something we can all work on endlessly. One sure fire way to have confidence is to be prepared, invest the time to be knowledgeable and then show up with intention for everything you do!

What makes you feel confident?

Lipstick, great shoes and being prepared/organized!

What have you had to overcome that’s made you who you are? There are lots of trials and errors in life as you shape your career and find your passions. Not being afraid to fail, facing fears (even when you really don’t want to) and knowing when to pivot have shaped the person I am today.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

Anyone who is facing fears, making sacrifices for others, and taking the road less traveled.

What’s your beauty/fashion go to?

For beauty, obvious – but true, Florapy masks at least 1x per week. Some of my other staples are Cetaphil Daily Cleanser, Thayers Witch Hazel and Avene Thermal Spring Water Mist. For fashion, chunky boots and lots of color!

What would you say is the best thing about you? I’m a work in progress!

What does equality mean to you?

Kindness and compassion, one love, no judgement.

What is your mission statement/what does your brand name mean?

Our mission is to transform skincare into a wellness experience. Florapy is the words Flower and Therapy combined!

Quim:

Quim is a sexual wellness brand focusing on being your best sexual being, having pleasure and having fun. I got to try their smooth operator intimate serum and have some fun myself. https://instagram.com/its.quim?igshid=p7gkw5cfjs4s

Fluide:

Fluide is an incredible brand based around the purpose of making makeup and beauty for everyone. I tried out some nail polish which I love and some highlight/glitter. Co-writer Robert took home the glitter to try and their photos will be included.

Khiasi:

Khiasi is a beauty superfood! They sell packs of superfood for you to mix in with your drinks everyday. I’ve been trying these for a while now and notice that the mix in is not grainy which is super nice and that I just kind of feel like I have a nicer glow.

The interview:

What inspires you?

Travel, wellness, friends and nature.

What’s your sign and how do you think that plays a part in your life?

I'm a Cancer. I never really thought much about it until I met my friend Zu 6 years ago and she's all about that. I learned quite a few things about my sign that made a lot of sense about how I do things. She's always sending me my horoscope. I am very protective of the people and things I love, and even though I consider myself pretty strong, I'm very sensitive.

What is the main purpose of your account/brand?

To promote wellness and self-care.

What is something you love deeply about yourself?

My determination and my loyalty.

What’s some advice you have for other people revolving around confidence?

You have to believe in yourself, and if you are not there yet, do the fake it till you make it thing, until you actually start believing it. Don't let other people and people's standards define you. Once you find your value and who you are, you start becoming immune to people's comments and criticism, and start feeling like there's nothing you can't do.

What makes you feel confident?

My sense of humour and a good hair day!

What have you had to overcome that’s made you who you are?

I am an immigrant and a woman, and I worked hard to get to a high position in the company I was working at, to then realize it wasn't what I actually wanted and had lost the passion I had for that industry. That's what made me find my real passion, and that led me to create Khiasi. Starting a company and developing Khiasi Beauty Superfood was one of the biggest challenges I've ever faced. I launched the product a month after giving birth to my first baby. So after going through that, I feel like there's nothing I can't do.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

Women who are go getters.

What’s your beauty/fashion go to?

I don't have much time to think too much about that lately, so I stick to neutral colors and casual/smart styling. jeans a black top and a blazer or soft trench. For beauty I like clean beauty that doesn't break the bank. And lipstick is always a good idea.

What would you say is the best thing about you?

My ability to connect with people.

What does equality mean to you?

Fairness, it shouldn't be such a topic because it's just what is fair.

Tell me about your mission statement and why your brand is named what it is.

Khiasi was born from the belief that nutrition has a lasting effect on health and beauty. We are passionate about wellness, and have the simple mission to create quality products based on natural ingredients, making it easy for a little self-care to go a long way. Kiasi is a name given to girls in Africa that means strength, but the domain was already taken, so we added the H.

Poirier:

Poirier is a jewelry brand based around bringing nice pieces at affordable prices. I have the dome ring by them and it is easily just such a staple piece. https://instagram.com/shoppoirier?igshid=17zwfi563sv6f

The interview:

What inspires you?

The world and people around me, especially nature and a good thrift store.

What’s your sign and how do you think that plays a part in your life?

I'm a Cancer. I don't know that it does. I am a person who thinks "it is fun to think about" but I don't put a lot of stock into it. With that said, everything I have read about a Cancer sounds a lot like me especially the parts about loving home and being emotional.

What is the main purpose of your account/brand?

To change the jewelry industry. Our goal is to make it an inclusive space that everyone can participate in.

What is something you love deeply about yourself?

My tenacity.

What’s some advice you have for other people revolving around confidence?

That you deserve to be seen and heard. That you deserve to take up space and have opinions. And that you don't have to feel the best everyday to still deserve the best. You deserve to be treated with respect no matter what.

What makes you feel confident?

Superficially? A good hair day and good accessories. Deeper? Knowing who I am and trusting my gut.

What have you had to overcome that’s made you who you are?

The normal criticisms and unsolicited advice from loved ones and strangers for being in a larger body. And learning to quiet those voices so that I can really hear my own. And then growing up in a family that struggles with a lot of mental illness and who I needed to be to help them and myself through trying times.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

Honestly, every person who really chases their dream by taking scary, but necessary steps to make it a reality.

What’s your beauty/fashion go to?

Jeans, black top, black boots, lots of jewelry, and a good purse.

What would you say is the best thing about you?

I hope my creativity, work ethic, and how fiercely I love.

What does equality mean to you?

I think I interpret it as the literal definition "the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities."

That everyone gets a seat at the table and it isn't contingent on anything.

And when there is an inequity, especially if you benefit from that inequity, you do all in your power to change it.

What is your mission statement/what does your brand name mean?

Everyday jewelry for every body because you deserve to shine.

“I have been a size 26 and a size 12. I know how hard it is to find beautiful, well-made things. We have made some strides in fashion but none in jewelry and accessories. We deserve better. This is about jewelry, but this is about much more than jewelry. This is about visibility and representation. This is about sense-of-self. This is about choice. This is about self-expression without compromise.”

Our brand name, Poirier, is my last name. This is so close to me. It's so personal I couldn't imagine calling it anything else.

Enjoy The Mystery:

This artist and brand makes art close to their heart and for everybody to enjoy. https://instagram.com/enjoythemystery?igshid=pmr0sie5xnlj

The interview:

What inspires you?

I am inspired by so many things! People, places, colors, emotions, experiences, small and intricate objects, just to name a few things.

What’s your sign and how do you think that plays a part in your life?

I’m a Taurus and think it plays a part in my life by making me stubborn and persistent (like a bull) especially in situations involving my art/the pursuit of my goals. I’m also a sleepy gal and fit the stereotype of a Taurus who needs 26 hours of sleep a night!

What is the main purpose of your account/brand?

To showcase my artwork and connect with people who are interested in learning more about me and what I do!

What is something you love deeply about yourself?

I love my creativity.

What’s some advice you have for other people revolving around confidence?

Confidence is such a unique experience from person to person so I don’t think I’m qualified to give anyone specific advice on what do to. All that I would say is to be yourself and do what makes you feel like you’re living your best life!

What makes you feel confident?

I can’t think of any specific activity or material item that makes me feel confident. I think confidence is something that stems from putting in work to accept and love who you by nurturing an honest and forgiving outlook towards yourself. I am not trying to say that I have perfected this outlook by any means, but when it comes to confidence, this is what I try to work towards.

What have you had to overcome that’s made you who you are?

I have always struggled with anxiety. This is something I don’t think I will ever necessarily ‘overcome’ but it is an aspect of who I am that can be challenging to work through at times. It requires a lot of effort to understand how my anxiety impacts my perspective and how to actively work through the emotional experiences which negatively impact my overall quality of life. The more I learn about the things that trigger my anxiety, the better I am at being kind to myself and others.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

I have spent days racking my brain trying to think of a particular artist/person who inspires my artwork or whose lifestyle I actively try to emulate.

What’s your beauty/fashion go to?

Glossier Boy Brow.

What would you say is the best thing about you?

I think that the best thing about myself is my desire to continually grow and learn, even when it can be really challenging to do so.

What does equality mean to you?

I think that equality happens when everyone has a metaphorical ‘seat at the table.’ However, I don’t think that equality happens as a result of diversity. I do think that equality has the possibility to stem from diversity. But getting people of different races, genders or backgrounds together in one room is just the start. Equality to me, is when there is a genuine sense of mutual respect in that room which allows for everyone to have the opportunity to be truly heard and understood for their own unique contributions and perspectives.

While creating mixed media crafts often including polymer clay, 3d canvas wall art, and fabric dying Russell explores melting boundaries between art and crafting. What does art need to be considered art? Enjoy the Mystery crafts force the viewer to reconsider how they interact with daily objects, as well as their own limitations of reality. Russell explores the binary between vulnerability and censorship and what it means to inhabit a body that is often controversial. Russell channels personal experience into each piece while melting boundaries between art for art's sake and the role of the artist as a witness.

Dandy LA:

Dandy sells sustainably made clothing and neck scarves! Their patterns are beautiful and so are their ethics. https://instagram.com/dandy.la?igshid=2rpdgadakuy0

Together Textiles:

These pieces are hand woven and made beautifully in Turkey. They’re soft, cozy and still airy enough to be comfortable for any season. Their products include robes, towels and hand cloths. https://instagram.com/togethertextiles?igshid=lrae2vehaqd1 The interview:

What inspires you?

Together Textiles is a husband (Güven) and wife (Allie, ME!) duo traveling with our two year old + 5 month old from coast to coast in a cargo van selling at local markets, fleas and trade shows.

What’s your sign and how do you think that plays a part in your life?

I am a Sagittarius. I am a free spirit traveler. I have excessive amounts of energy and typically run at a faster pace than those around me.

What is the main purpose of your account/brand?

Together Textiles is a family business of artisans that dates back over 50 years of designers, weavers, and tailors.  Antique looms located inside each home in a rural village of Turkey are used to weave organic Turkish cotton and bamboo to create luxury fabrics using techniques passed down from generation to generation.  The looms at work are the "heartbeat" of the village.

We strive to live and work full time as a family, sustaining a minimal lifestyle and continuing to share these textiles rooted in tradition and culture with the world.

What is something you love deeply about yourself?

I am open to growth.

What’s some advice you have for other people revolving around confidence?

Build an army of people who love and support you. Only give time to those who lift you up and make you feel good.

Cut toxic people and situations out of your life immediately and don’t look back.

What makes you feel confident?

Having people who love me with me every day.

What have you had to overcome that’s made you who you are?

We’ve been importing our products to the United States since February 2017 and have experienced some bumps along the way!

Our first holiday season we attended and sold at a market in Cleveland, OH for the first time and almost sold out of our product on the first day of a three day festival!

One year later, the night before the same market, we loaded our product and supplies into a mid-size SUV perfectly, (ensuring we have enough product this time) like a puzzle with barely enough room for two people to sit, only to find out the SUV wouldn’t start when we went to fill up the gas for the road trip!  We laugh about this experience because it began pouring rain and we had to unload, and reload into two separate cars late into the night!

We have learned quickly that being a small business owner means that you feel every bump in the road a lot harder than a larger company. We have had to let go of what we can’t control and take every experience as an opportunity to learn!

Who are your biggest inspirations?

Parents are super heros.

What’s your beauty/fashion go to?

Air dried hair and moisturized skin.

What would you say is the best thing about you?

I am a morning person.

What is your mission statement/what does your brand name mean?

Turkish Cotton is known for its extra long fibers which makes the towels durable and ability to be washed in a washing machine without losing its integrity.

Purchasing from Together Textiles means you are not only supporting an ancient craft but our family community of artisans in Turkey!

The interview:

What inspires you?

Nature, oceans, mountains, desert, southwest, other creative people.

What’s your sign and how do you think that plays a part in your life?

I’m a Taurus, and I believe I am a quintessential example of one. Very grounded, enjoys beauty, well made goods, stablility, passionate about taking care of the environment. I feel over the years I have really grown into my sign even more, my career, hobbies, lifestyle, home and persona all truely reflect the qualities of a Taurus.

What is the main purpose of your account/brand?

Being conscious about the environment I didn’t want to make things for the longest time. I was conflicted at the though of using valuable resources to make things that people don’t necessarily NEED. But then I realized that everyone is in this earth with unique gifts to share and mine happens to be making things. My purpose is to make things that bring light into peoples lives while using materials that have a conscious connection with the environment.

What is something you love deeply about yourself?

I love my compassion.

What’s some advice you have for other people revolving around confidence?

I think you are what you believe you are. If you believe you can’t do something then you won’t be able to. If you believe you can do something and see that as who you naturally are, you will be amazed how the universe reflects that back to you as truth.

What makes you feel confident?

I feel confident when I succeed at doing something outside of my comfort zone. Makes me feel invincible.

Also, I feel confident when I’m wearing an outfit that I’m really vibing. It makes me feel as though my outer appearance is a perfect reflection of how great I’m feeling inside.

What have you had to overcome that’s made you who you are?

I believe I have overcome being too comfortable. My natural tendency is to be secure, comfortable and just cruise through life. I push myself to do uncomfortable things so that I continue to grow, learn and continually evolve trying to be a better person.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

My parent and grandparents. I’m probably a lot like them.

What’s your beauty/fashion go to?

Beauty sleep.

What would you say is the best thing about you?

The best thing about me is if you are cold I can knit you a hat and wrap you in piles of blankets!

What does equality mean to you?

I’m not sure, I think it depends on the context.

What is your mission statement/what does your brand name mean?

My brand name is my name, because the things I make are just part of who I am, as opposed to some separate concept.

My mission statement is a work in progress! Words aren’t easy for me, so it’s pushing me outside my comfort zone!

Samuel Ethnobotanics:

I got to try their rose general salve and it smells just about as good as it feels. https://instagram.com/samuel_ethnobotanics?igshid=ddcx024bj48e

The interview:

What inspires you?

I see the world in systems, they are like fractals for me.  Everything touches everything else, and I want to follow all of the threads.  It is why I created this product… to create a thread. The thread starts with the sun and then joins the air and soil and rain in a plant, which becomes a seed, and then people join in to discover the seed, which is converted into an oil which then we convert to our products, and when you put it onto you skin, it becomes your skin.  And one day you will become the air and the soil and the rain. – I am inspired by this system.

What’s your sign and how do you think that plays a part in your life?

I am a Virgo, I think that Virgos have to contributed their vision. They are the possibility of what they see in some way, they sometimes can create a form which before did not exist.

What is the main purpose of your account/brand?

It is to reclaim community between plants and people.  We are using ethnomedicinal relationships to nourish the skin.

What is something you love deeply about yourself?

I love that I am a believer in something more which is beyond us and also what makes us.

What’s some advice you have for other people revolving around confidence?

If it is the case that we are all connected and all of the same substance, than what we see also in some ways comes from ourselves.  That means we are more powerful than what we might have thought, it means that we are the observer of the universe; which means that we can tap into it if we chose.  And if this is true for us, then that means we are the universe for those who we see, too.

What makes you feel confident?

I believe that I have agency over myself and can impact what I see – it is an awesome (in the true sense of the word) prospective.

What have you had to overcome that’s made you who you are?

Who I am now is in many ways who I was as a child. However, in the years of my youth, there was much learning.  I was trying to be what I imagined I wanted to be, I was trying on different ways of being like clothes. In my teens, I had put on so many jackets of how to be, I had lost who I was. The process of gaining confidence was the process of accepting who I was, and removing all those layers I had put on over the years. Once I accepted who I was and lived again in that form, what is called ‘confidence’ just occurs necessarily.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

My grandfather. He has shown me how much a person can give, and he is real.

What’s your beauty/fashion go to?

I try not to wear so many different articles of clothes.  I sort of have ‘my jacket’ ‘my sweater’ etc. I guess I dress myself in a similar way to how I pack for backpacking.  The way to be most warm is to wear everything I have, not to have a super warm jacket…. I don’t know if that makes sense.

What would you say is the best thing about you?  That I mostly live my life like a child. (of course, I have grown up responsibilities). But I basically have that same sort of momentum. Its great.

What does equality mean to you?

Equality ought to be a bigger part of our society, at least equality of opportunity.  Our society seems to be over expressing a bit this tendency for individualism, and it seems to me we have forgotten the society part of society.  In all my travels I have learned two major facts: 1) sunsets are the most beautiful thing, and they are free. 2) everyone just wants to be happy and secure, no matter their background.  Equality means that: to the best of our ability, we see that the most people secure the most happiness, or at the very least, nobody need start at a disadvantage..

What is your mission statement/what does your brand name mean?

Our mission statement is: Ethnobotany seeks to understand the relationships between plants and people.  Samuel Ethnobotanics seeks to revive these relationships and make them accessible to everyone. It is called Samuel because this is my pen name for a book of poetry I wrote. Ethnobotanics is a new category I hope to establish, where people and plants come together and are left intact.

Green Room Body Co.

This brand makes eco-friendly hair and skin products with a great moral compass and an abundance of feel-good scents.

The interview:

What inspires you?

Oh, so many things! People who have said and done great things, regardless of the status quo. People who say and do shitty things because it’s accepted and knowing we can CHANGE what is acceptable. Beautiful places and wanting to keep them that way. Places that were once beautiful, but are now littered with garbage or ravaged by the consequences of a warming climate, and knowing we have the power to FIX it. Connecting with like-minded people who have the same goals and interests that I have. Learning new stuff…  you know when you start something new and just become so hooked and obsessive about it and it’s super exciting. I love that.

What’s your sign and how do you think that plays a part in your life?

I’m a Libra. I’m not super big into astrology but I definitely identify with Libras being logical and encouraging fair solutions and dialogue. I love hashing out both sides of anything (especially all things sustainability and “green beauty” related). In the same sense, I like being called out and put in my place if I’m talking a big game about something but haven’t taken the time to fully educate myself about it… sucks at the time but I appreciate it later.

What is the main purpose of your account/brand?

The purpose of the brand is to provide personal care alternatives for those interested in connecting with nature, lowering their footprint, and giving back to the environment. All of the products are made of natural, natural-identical, and naturally derived ingredients. They are designed to be multi-purpose and no-bullshit… why spend money on 5 different face creams, and create 5X the waste, when you can get the same benefits from just one product? Sustainable packaging is a huge focus as well. The boxes for our shampoo and conditioner bars are made of post-consumer recycled paper embedded with wildflower seeds. Plant that shit and find joy in the fact that a valuable resource has been re-purposed (paper), no plastic waste was created, and you got your hands dirty by growing something that will give back to the planet in some small way. The bees will be stoked and any way you can re-connect with the natural world is instantly fulfilling. As fun and positive as we try to be, we also use the brand as a platform to talk about current social and environmental issues. Instragram can be a nauseatingly positively fake and superficial place and I think that’s problematic. I like to try and push the envelope and dig a little deeper.

What is something you love deeply about yourself?

I love that I can make myself happy. I think I’m a pretty resilient person and if I’m ever feeling lost, or anxious, or sad, then I know there’s always something that I can do to improve the situation. If you’re feeling shitty, usually it’s up to you to do something about it.

What’s some advice you have for other people revolving around confidence?

Don’t give a fuck about what anyone else thinks (but still be mindful). People are consumed with their own lives and chances are nobody is thinking twice about the things that make you feel insecure. Anyways, people like when you are, or say, or do something interesting or controversial. Doing things differently is the spice of life.

What makes you feel confident?

Feeling educated and informed. Being well-rested, healthy, and fit. Making people laugh. Creating something beautiful. Catching a really good wave. Smooth legs and being tanned.

What have you had to overcome that’s made you who you are?

Honestly, I’ve had a very privileged life filled with opportunity and good health. The stuff I’ve overcome is the normal hard stuff that everyone goes through in life… career and education ups and downs, family issues, friendship losses, etc. I’ve been very very lucky and try really hard to use this privilege for good. With great power, comes great responsibility.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

Ummm, someone who I love to follow and learn from is Leah Dawson, a surfer who lives on the north shore of Oahu. As an “influencer” who uses nature as her platform, her messaging is super authentic and her environmental work speaks volumes. She also shreds and is such a stylish surfer. I wish I could surf half as good as she does.

What’s your beauty/fashion go to?

One of my new years resolutions is actually to try harder when it comes to fashion and going out in public haha. I like to stick to the basics and am pretty low-key/like being comfortable and practical (gum boots are life on Vancouver Island). Second-hand fashion everything though. I feel too guilty and don’t even like buying new clothes. I actually get so much joy out of thrifting and wearing clothing donated to me by friends. It’s way more fun for me to know that I’ve found a treasure and that something has had a past life. As far as go-to pieces, going to keep wearing my black converse until the soles fall off and anything high waisted. My beauty regime is very boring… I only use the Green Room products and any toothpaste, body oil, etc that I make myself. Only water and a face scrubbie to wash my face. No make-up. Shampoo and conditioner when I have too (usually a day or two too late haha) and always air-dry my hair. I used to do weird shit like spray salty ocean water on my hair and sit in the sun at work or soak it in chamomile tea and lemon in the shower to try and make it blonder. Got it professional coloured for the first time this year though!

What would you say is the best thing about you?

That I always want to be better? Positive transformation gives life meaning.

What does equality mean to you?

Treating everyone the same. Equity is recognizing people’s differences and giving them what they need to level out the playing field.

What is your mission statement/what does your brand name mean?

Our mission is to empower others to practice conscious consumerism and ultimately give back to our main girl Mama Earth, the root of our happiness, provider of all resources, and home to everyone on this planet. Green Room is symbolic of a safe space to explore this and to discuss other ways we can be more mindful of our effects on the environment. In the green room, we can start to slowly tweak and alter our daily habits and thought processes to eventually lead a “greener” lifestyle. The “green room” is also surfing slang for being in the inside of a barreling wave. Green Room Body Co. sort of started on a surf trip in Mexico, and our first product was Tuff Stuff, the zinc covering cream, so it all seemed sort of fitting.
